It was a sad day when the King’s Head pub closed in 2014, and our Whiteparish community lost a vital hub in the village. Following an initial call to arms last summer, a number of us got together to form a steering group to see what could be done to re-open a much-loved, much-missed, village asset.

This website has just one basic aim: to support a campaign to have two thriving pubs in the village again—one of them a re-opened King's Head, fulfilling its former role as a Whiteparish institution, but with improvements and extra facilities that villagers and others ask for.

HOW can we save the King's Head?

Our first major step was to distribute a printed flyer (with survey form on the back) to find out how important a re-opened King’s Head could be to you and your family, and what you think it should provide.

Most homes around Whiteparish received their printed flyers around the middle of January. (If you didn't have one delivered, you can still download and print a copy from this website.) We crunched the numbers from the completed survey forms and held a public meeting in Whiteparish's Memorial Hall on a cold and rainy 29th January. Seventy-seven people braved the appalling weather to hear about possible ways forward to acquiring the pub, to see the results of the survey, and hear about some of the conclusions that could be inferred from the raw statistics; and then to take part in a lively and prolonged question-and-answer session (and to enjoy some refreshments, including local beer from the Hop Back brewery). Then the formal part of the meeting concluded with a vote on whether we should go forward to what would be the next step: applying to the Plunkett Foundation for a bursary to help with essential early expenses such as a property valuation. The result? An overwhelming show of hands voting in favour!

So the project passed its first hurdle—maybe its first two hurdles—and moved ahead into the next phase. To find out much more about the project, please use the menus above. Via the website and other media, we will do our best to keep the village informed about all significant happenings and progress. To start with some of the content may be a bit skimpy, and of course it's all subject to change, but we're adding useful information as quickly as possible. The best place to look for the latest information will always be the News page, where you can read the full versions of all news items. (The "Recent News" box on this [Home] page shows the latest six news items, but only the first few lines of each.)

About Us

The King's Head Community Group are a collection of people living in or near Whiteparish, Wilts, who all share a common concern: that the much-loved King's Head (currently closed) should be saved from being sold as a private residence and should re-open as a pub–if possible a community-owned one–and resume its proper role as a Whiteparish institution!
